The past year has been filled with a lot of uncertainties for me. I don’t know about you, but I realized that I am an adult, well a young adult and I have to start acting like one, and that kind of sucks.
Hello everyone, welcome back to this site🥰. This is my official blog post since my hiatus. I have a ton of things to write to you all but I’ll start with this, young adulthood and its struggles.
Adulthood is the timeframe of growth when physical maturation has been attained and specific biological, mental, cultural, individual characteristics and various other developments concerned with getting older have taken place.
Young adulthood is a unique developmental period that occurs between the ages of 18 and 25 years, during which there are key developmental tasks that allow the young adult to participate in self-exploration and identity formation.
It is often said that the transition to adulthood is hard for a lot of teenagers. You are at a stage in your life where you come to the realization that you are in charge of your life and all those decisions that your parents got to make for you are now left in your hands to do so. You stop getting babied and have to hold yourself accountable for your actions.
Do you have classes? You have to get up and go. Assignments? You get them done. Feeling sick? Go get medication. No one is going to hold your hands or force you to do all these things, you have to get them done yourself.
I didn’t just wake up to the epiphany that I had slowly entered into adulthood, it was after a series of events. I don’t know about you but I had a tough time adjusting and I still do. I call my mum and older siblings about anything whether it’s personal or school-related. Are they tired of me calling and texting about the most mundane things? I’m sure they are, but will I still continue? Of Course! Who else will help me navigate through this confusing part of my life🙄😜😂💔.
I was going to make this post into a little rant about my struggles with adulthood but then I realized that it would just be a bit shallow of me and we all have different experiences, so I decided to interview a few of my friends about their struggles with adulthood.
*DISCLAIMER*
Please this is in no particular order oo, it’s totally random. No one should come and say that they were not first or they were last😅💔. And to my friends who I didn’t interview, don’t worry they’ll be other posts I will write that you would contribute to😘❤️. Let’s get to it!
ACEKEED
IS YOUR NAME REALLY ACEKEED OR IS IT A NICKNAME? 😂😂
“It’s a nickname. My birth name is Iniobong.”
CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT YOUR STRUGGLES ARE WITH ADULTHOOD?
“Well, there are a lot of struggles that come with adulthood that plague most young adults. There are quite a few that cuts across all continents in my opinion but I’ll talk about just four which I think are really major. They include; financial instability, peer pressure, substance abuse, and academic issues.”
(1). Financial Instability:
A lot of young adults struggle with money issues, you come to realize that there are certain things you’ll need money for that your parents won’t understand why it’s a necessity and not be of any financial help. You are often left to sort yourself out in that regard. This can also apply to people from rich homes. ”This is where peer pressure comes in.”
(2). Peer Pressure:
In quest for money, you are left with two options, get a job or ask your friends for the money or ways you can make money. Often times you get to find out that they don’t get their extra cash legally, some are into ”fraudulent activities” or ”prostitution”. Some people may decide not to involve themselves.
If you have siblings or family members you can ask, it won’t be a problem for you. But if you’re not, that’s where the problem lies. You might join them if you are not strong-willed.
(3). Substance Abuse:
“If the people that surround you or your friends take hard drugs or smoke, you would most likely be influenced by them”, Acekeed said. ”It often starts from ’try am you go like am’ or ’try am e go sweet you die!’ or ’you be small pikin’ if you keep resisting”, he continued.
SO WHAT DOES ONE DO IN THAT SITUATION?
“I suggest that you leave that place immediately and avoid them or anywhere they’ll be in the future. Some of these substances include alcohol, hard drugs, smoking etc.
Also, always ask if any cake, brownie, drink or cookie is spiked to avoid stories that touch“, Acekeed answered.
(4). Academic Issues:
This tends to be a problem for young adults still in school, possibly in higher institutions. It can be hard to find a balance between academics, extracurricular activities, and other aspects of your life. It is very important to find a balance for them if not one or the other will suffer. Make sure that your academics take precedence over the others.
But in a case where you may be forced to do a course, you don’t have passion for and you’re learning something else on the side that you’re really good at and have passion for like web designing or fashion designing etc, Acekeed advised that you should keep doing that so you’ll always have something to fall back on after school.
“Those who come from dysfunctional households may find it hard to concentrate in school because they know that things are not well at home. I watched a friend of mine struggled for a year in school because of this before he eventually dropped out. It was the absolute worst!”. 💔 There are some people who might not be able to afford textbooks and other school supplies which might affect their grades.
